SQL Server 2012 RTM Cumulative Update #8 is available!

The SQL Server team has released CU #8 for SQL Server 2012 RTM.

This build has 6 fixes

Relevant for builds 11.0.2100 -> 11.0.2409. Do not attempt to install on SQL Server 2012 SP1 (any build >= 11.0.3000) or any previous version.

SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2 CTP is available

You can download the Service Pack 2 CTP from the following URL:

The build # is 10.50.3720. This service pack contains all of the fixes from Service Pack 1 & Cumulative Updates 1 through 5, and a couple of other minor fixes (a couple of SSRS bugs and a bug about an ALTER TABLE batch not being cached correctly). It does not include fixes from Service Pack 1 Cumulative Update #6, which I mentioned recently.

You should *NOT* install this service pack preview if:

your build number (SELECT @@VERSION;) is 10.00.xxxx (since this is SQL Server 2008, not SQL Server 2008 R2);
your build number is >= 10.50.1815 and < 10.50.2500 (since you may be undoing fixes you are using from RTM CU13); or,
your build number is >= 10.50.2811 (since you will be undoing fixes you might be using from SP1 CU6).

Last night Microsoft released two new cumulative updates for SQL Server 2008 R2:

Cumulative Update 5 for SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1

Build 10.50.2806
16 fixes, including a nasty SCOPE_IDENTITY() bug and several performance fixes.

My recommendation: You should test and plan for this update if SELECT @@VERSION is between 10.50.2500 and 10.50.2805.

Cumulative Update 12 for SQL Server 2008 R2 (RTM)

3 fixes but none are directly related to the relational engine.

My recommendation: Consider applying if SELECT @@VERSION is between 10.50.1600 and 10.50.1809, you are affected by any of the issues highlighted in the KB article, and you are avoiding Service Pack 1 intentionally (otherwise you should install SP1 and CU5 for SP1).

My usual disclaimer: these updates are NOT for SQL Server 2008. Only apply to systems where @@VERSION returns 10.50.xxxx.

Last night Microsoft released a new cumulative update package (CU #9) for SQL Server 2008 R2. The build # is 10.50.1804 and it contains 26 fixes - some of which, like the new CU for SP1 (CU #2), address access violation and wrong-results bugs. You can download the update here:

Disclaimer: I separated out these blog posts to help alleviate confusion. This update is for SQL Server 2008 R2 RTM (where @@VERSION <= 10.50.1803). It is not for SQL Server 2008, which is a completely separate version, nor is it for SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 (where @@VERSION >= 10.50.2500).
