Very early this morning, Microsoft released four updates: one for SQL Server 2005 SP3, one for SQL Server 2005 SP4, one for SQL Server 2008 SP1, and one for SQL Server 2008 SP2.

SQL Server 2005 SP3 Cumulative Update #15

KB #2507766

SQL Server 2005 SP4 Cumulative Update #3

KB #2507769

9.00.5266

5

SQL Server 2008 SP1 Cumulative Update #13

KB #2497673

10.00.2816

12

SQL Server 2008 SP2 Cumulative Update #3

KB #2498535

10.00.4279

25

Note that Microsoft has officially confirmed that these are the last cumulative updates for SQL Server 2005 (both SP3 and SP4). So if you're still on SQL Server 2005, it really is time to start considering how long you want to stay on that platform.

Also, please do not try to apply the SQL Server 2008 cumulative updates to SQL Server 2008 R2 systems. You won't get very far and you won't break anything; I'm just trying to save you some time.

The cumulative update for SP2 restores the fixes that were potentially undone by applying SP2 (or the SP2 CTP) after applying CU9 or CU10 to SP1. Confusing, yes, but at least it's straightened out now. We won't have to deal with this until the next service pack.

SQL Server 2008 SP1 Cumulative Update #11- build # 10.0.2804
KB #2413738

I'm too busy preparing how we're going to deploy and test SP2 on all of our SQL Server 2008 instances. So without any delay, here are the downloads / fix information:

Download Details: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 2

KB #2285068 : List of the bugs that are fixed in SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 2

As we've seen before, the release has been quietly posted to the downloads site and knowledge base with little fanfare, and there is not yet a post on the SQL Server Release Services blog. But I'm sure you'll hear more about it soon.

Note that the Service Pack only includes the fixes that were in SP1 CU 1 through 8. So if you have already applied CU9 or CU10, I would hold off on deploying the service pack for now, especially if you are relying on any of the fixes in either of those CUs - because there is a chance that you will lose them.

The service pack will patch any existing SQL Server 2008 instances (and client tools) on your machine, including Express instances (I seem to remember that you used to have to patch Express instances separately, with the whole Express setup program). Note that you can't patch client tools with a SQL Server 2008 Service Pack if you already have SQL Server 2008 R2 tools installed - this just means that the Shared Tools checkbox will be unavailable.

I know that some of you like to hear about the build numbers more than anything else. This service pack will move your build number to 10.0.4000:

Fellow SQL Server MVP Denis Gobo (blog It seems very odd, given that - in response to customer demand - Service Pack 2 was promised in Q3 of this year, and Q3 ends in 8 days. And given also that typically another CU will need to be issued shortly after SP2 is released, in order to capture the fixes that branched off probably in July when the CTP of SP2 was first offered (I blogged about this as well).

The SQL Server Release Services blog has been oddly silent for a month (EDIT: they have pushed a post for this CU). Internal inquiries by several fellow MVPs have gone unanswered as well. At least one fellow twitterer feels more confident than I do that the release is imminent, but it begs the question, where is his information coming from?

Will we see Service Pack 2 by the end of Q3, or has the timeline slipped?

EDIT: I've already had a couple people ask if this update applies to R2, or if there is an equivalent update for R2 available at this time. This update is for SQL Server 2008 SP1 only. Cumulative Updates for SQL Server 2008 R2 have been released in conjunction with SQL Server 2005 SP3 CUs, so I don't expect that there will be a release for R2 so soon after the last one (mid-August). The next R2 CU should be made available around mid-October.

SQL Server 2008 SP1 CU #9 is available

The SQL Server Release Services team recently announced that they have released a new Cumulative Update for SQL Server 2008 SP1:

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sqlreleaseservices/archive/2010/07/19/cumulative-update-9-for-sql-server-2008-service-pack-1.aspx

This update will bring you to build 10.00.2789. From the looks of the KB article, a healthy dose of fixes are made available in this update (a lot more than it looks like are in store for SP2).

KB #2083921 : Cumulative update package 9 for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1

Note that if you have installed the SQL Server 2008 SP2 CTP (which I talked about previously), you should not attempt to install this update. It is likely that shortly after the final release of SP2 is made available, there will be a follow-up Cumulative Update that will be published, and will include all or most of the fixes from CU #9.

Edit for Roger Falor: yes, the 64-bit version is available. When you go to the KB article and select "View and request Hotfix Downloads," the KB article tries to do you a favor, and presents you only downloads for the platform you're currently running. So in your case, you've probably gone looking for the 64-bit hotfix but you're using an x86 machine. Here is what you'll see:

If you click on "Show hotfixes for all platforms and languages," you will get more options. I've highlighted the one you're after in the following screen shot:

SQL Server 2008 SP2 (CTP) is available for testing

While I don't recommend you rush out and deploy this to your production instances today, it might not be a bad idea to get a head start on testing the fixes in SQL Server 2008 SP2 in your development and/or test environments. I have tested it on a few standalone machines, and so far have not come across any issues. I have not yet attempted to install it on any clusters.

You can download the CTP here:

You can read about what's fixed in KB #979450:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=979450

This will put you at build 10.0.3798.0. While the list of fixes for the SP2 CTP itself is small, you should also consider what build you're at now. Most of the fixes from cumulative updates released after SP1 will also be included (and I think this is part of the reason the CU releases got out of sync last month; potentially they are trying to avoid the "SP removes fixes from the most recent CU" problem that we've seen in the past). Here is the list:

SQL Server 2008 SP1 Cumulative Update #8 (10.0.2775): http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=981702
SQL Server 2008 SP1 Cumulative Update #7 (10.0.2766): http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=979065
SQL Server 2008 SP1 Cumulative Update #6 (10.0.2757): http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=977443
SQL Server 2008 SP1 Cumulative Update #5 (10.0.2746): http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=975977
SQL Server 2008 SP1 Cumulative Update #3 (10.0.2723): http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=971491
SQL Server 2008 SP1 Cumulative Update #2 (10.0.2714): http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=970315
SQL Server 2008 SP1 Cumulative Update #1 (10.0.2710): http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=969099

And if you're not even on SP1 yet, I'd love to know what you're waiting for...

You should also note that SP2 brings support for Data-Tier Applications, the SQL Server Utility, and a SharePoint add-in.
