I recently created my own avatar a few months ago when this was on the horizon. I sat in on a Microsoft Office User Group Meeting and found the content informative and the interaction similar to what I found at other User Group Meetings. The down side was there was no FREE food. :-) I encourage you to explore this world - especially Microsoft isalnd - and join us next Wednesday!

Until about 6 months ago, there seemed to be fairly good demand with anywhere from a low of 3 or 4 postings to a high of 12-15 postings for SQL Server related jobs.Over the past 2-3 months, there are typically only 2-3 postings. The number of job openings that I see on some of the listservs that i subscribe to are also down and some folks are reaching out for job leads on these channels as well.

Networking (the human to human kind) is important for your career. There are local User Group meetings that can help you build relationships with others in your geographic area. There are discussion forums that you can forge relationships on from posting and answering questions. There are events that you can attend to meet others with similar interestes as yourself. Having a network will not fully insulate you from economic downturns, but it may make them more bearble and shorten the length of time that it takes for a job search.
