Come See Me. I'll Probably Be Just Down the Street Soon!

Even though I've recently changed jobs, I'll still be speaking at a lot of SQL events across the country and internationally. There are still a few trips that I've yet to finalize, in particular with the fine folks in Houston, run by my friend Nancy Hidy (blog | twitter), and my friends in San Francisco and Silicon Valley, run by my friend Mark Ginnebaugh (blog | twitter). Also, do to some missed deadlines, it looks like I won't be speaking at the Nordic SQL Rally this fall. My bad! On the other hand, you can see when checking my roster, that I hardly have time to catch my breath with this travel schedule.

I'll also be doing several on-line events with the PASS Professional Development Virtual Chapter, run by Mark Caldwell (blog | twitter), through out the year.

The Year that was - 2011

Looking back on 2011, I'm surprised by two occurances. First, I got a lot of work done, despite myself. My biggest obstacles to high-performance are all self-derived; procrastination, disorganization, and plain ol' laziness. Second, I'm surprised I survived my personal travails. I've had my fill of frowns this year, from wayward children to caring for sick loved ones to self-inflicted injuries in 2011. I'm glad to be closing the door on a few of those chapters and look forward to better times in 2012.

Here's a run-down on my professional activities over the course of 2011:

I was also put in charge of the SQLServerPedia portion of the DBPedias sites. Some statistics there:

133 contributing bloggers
4,500 blog posts added in 2011 (out of a total 9,000 blog posts)
57,000 content items added in 2011 (out of a total 138,000 content items)
Monday-Thursday all Pedias average 8,700 visits combined
1.9 million visits in 2011 (out of a total 3.8 million visits to Pedia sites since SQLServerPedia was started in 2008)

2011 was also my year to jump into Twitter. By years end, I had accumulated:

I think that my increase in tweets had a direct correlation on my decrease in blog posts. Ironically, I have accumulated even more topics to blog about (I've somewhere around 630 nascent blog posts), but simply run out of time to put them into Wordpress. My blogging activity for 2011 was down to 77 entries, about half what I wrote in 2010.

Here, There, and Everywhere; Speaking in Fall 2011, Part 1

The last quarter of the year is usually my busiest due to the fantastic PASS Summit and SQLBits events. The fall looks a little different ... BECAUSE IT WILL BE EVEN BUSIER! Here's a rundown of where I'll be this fall through mid-October:

BASTA! SQLCON.NET

September 26 to 29; Mainz, Germany

This big developer and admin conference runs from September 26 to 29 in Mainz, Germany. I'll be delivering at least one session and hobnobbing with Quest customers, friends, and in a very weird twist, my oldest daughter Emily, who will be in the Rhineland at the exact same time on a graduation present I'd been planning for her since graduation in June.

SQLBits - Query Across the Mercy

September 29 to October 1; Liverpool, United Kingdom

One of my favorite conferences of the year! The organizers are great. The speakers are great! The attendees are great!! The venues are great!!! The lunches are ... um ... adequate. I'm doing all an new session on SQL Injection attack, this time with LOTS of demos kindly written by an attendee at one of my sessions in Cologne. He like the session so much, he decided to build demos to go along with it. (Thanks again, Volker!) And if you've attended before, you know how much fun our now traditional IT Horror Stories and IT Bingo Trivia sessions are. Make plans to attend these standing-room only sessions, before the fire marshal kicks us all out of the room for overfilling it.

The PASS Summit

Seriously. This is the one. If you can attend only one SQL Server training and community event in a given year, this is the one. Over 150 sessions and pre-conference seminars. Most everyone who is on the list of "who's who" in the world of SQL Server and Microsoft-related data management and development will be in attendance. And a large number of the Microsoft R&D team that builds, documents, and supports SQL Server will also be there.

Plus, more details to come on these events: Netherlands SQL Saturday, Belgium SQL Server Days, and SQLRally Nordic.

So when I got the news that my employer, Quest Software, wanted to send one of the team to an upcoming SQLCruise put on by Brent Ozar (blog | twitter) and Tim Ford (Blog/Twitter), another nostagic TV show song popped into my head -

I'm really excited about this trip and for a lot of reasons. First, I'm not going to lie - I've never been on a cruise. So this factor alone is pretty awesome. Second, Brent and Tim are two of my favorite human beings. I'm looking forward to the chance to see them. Third, SQLCruise is also about community and I'm looking forward to making some new friends. I'll also be an hand to provide as much free training and demonstration on any of the goodies we're giving away to the attendees. Finally, I'm looking forward to learning. Brent and Tim know their stuff. So, getting a chance to actually attend training under such skilled teachers is a treat I didn't expect!

SQL Bits, On the Cheap

I’ve tweeted previously about the SQL Bits conference in York on September 30th – October 2nd, but this is my first blog post about it. Now is the time to settle your plans to attend. And while you're settling those plans, take advantage of Quest Software's 20% discount on the Thursday and Friday sessions requiring payment. Just be sure to use the code QST20 when you register. The Saturday is free for everyone. Note - I said FREE. So if you're struggling to convince your boss of the value of the time off and cost required to attend these events, then at least plan to attend Saturday. Political Calculus - PASS Nominations

Do I have a dog in this Fight? If I did, it'd be the Warner Brothers Barnyard Dog.

After my term of service on the PASS board of directors ended in December of 2009, I fully intended to stay far, far out of the way. It's an intention that I've largely been able to fulfill,excluding the odd conversation with an occasional board member or committee chair looking for a little impartial advice when weighing some consideration or other.

If you keep up with going's on within PASS, then you'll know that there's been some hullabaloo lately. Please reference paragraph 1 again at this point to understand that I don't really know much about all this hullabaloo. (I read one blog post by Stuart Ainsworth and decided to henceforth avoid all other mention of the situation). I mentioned that I've been trying to stay out of PASS' way, correct? But sometimes you just can't dodge a bullet, even when you're bustin' out some Matrix-like moves and goin' all Neo/Keanu Reeves on it.

To wit, I was happy to volunteer in hosting our first Music City SQL Saturday, which also happened to occur the day after the PASS board of directors wrapped up their quarterly meeting here in beautiful (and hot) Nashville, TN. The two events were destined by the stars to overlap. Which also meant I was going to be hearing about said hullabaloo (reference paragraph 2, above), despite my better efforts to get out of its (the hullabaloo's) way.

(I'm being a bit disingenuous about being surprised that these events having some overlap. I hosted a party at my house the Friday before our SQL Saturday for our event speakers and also invited all of the PASS directors and staff who were still in town as well. So they were all coming together, like neutrons hurtling towards a chunk of uranium 236. You DO KNOW what happens when neutrons are hurtled at uranium 236, right?).

So despite trying to steer clear any PASS-related controversies, I'm compelled to speak up, albeit in as limited a fashion as I can manage. Most of the people involved, from candidates to committee members, are friends. I wrote endorsement letters for almost half of the candidates who made it to the Nomination Committee (NomCom) interview stage. So I'm far from being a totally impartial judge of how individual persons were treated. But, for what it's worth, I'm trying to make my post less about personalities and more about the overall direction of the process. In other words, I'm trying to be constructive, not destructive.

Since the call to vote is now open, I hope you'll take some time to get informed about the overall process as well as the candidates standing for election.

So what's your point?

Lots of people have complained about lots of things in this round of elections (so far), but what's anyone going to do about it? Well, my point in this and subsequent blog posts is to produce recommendations about the election process that will better it for PASS and the wider community.

I've asked several friends in the SQL Server community, as well as individuals unrelated to PASS or SQL Server but who have experience on corporate boards of directors, to join a group discussion focusing on the question:

“Many in the community seem to think that the PASS election process is badly broken. Do you think that PASS needs to implement fundamental and far-reaching changes to its election process, or does it only need some fine tuning? Please explain your thoughts?”

So now that some of the personal aspects of the discussions have calmed down, the main point I want to make is that we can make this better. But this will take a concerted and focused discussion to decide on the consensus.

Once the opening statements are all posted, we'll begin to work through the various points and topics (refer to the PASS discussion forums above) to see if we can drive consensus for concrete methods and steps for the nominations and election processes.

Dream Team Forms Around Azure

If you're wondering whether to hedge your long-term bets on cloud computing, this should help you solidify your thinking.

Microsoft has been building a dream team for Azure, including the patriarch of Windows (and father of Windows NT) Dave Cutler. Tweets from several Microsofties reveal that another revered technologist, Mark Russinovich of SysInternals fame has also joined the team. When almost all of the heavy hitters in a company like Microsoft go to work on a single exciting new technology, you can easily tell which direction the wind is blowing. I encourage you to get on board soon with cloud computing, at least in experimentation mode. Read more about Russinovich joining the Azure team here.

I've been enjoying two new features of Wordpress over on my professional website which is missing here on SQLblog.com - scheduled blog posts and auto-tweets. What got me thinking about using scheduled blog posts and auto-tweets, you ask? For starters, my friend and former colleague, Brent Ozar, put a lot of thought and time into the question "Who Owns Your Content?". Then, to add fuel to the fire, two of Quest's best marketing minds, Christian Hasker and Andy Grant, took a survey of all the places I was posting my thoughts and IP, which led to some great advice from Andy. I'd initially thought that by writing in multiple places and on many other websites, it would promote my content. But a quick analysis showed that I was giving without getting anything in return, not even recognition. I was easily writing three or four magazine style articles per month with very little to show for it, not even ping-backs to my website.

The schedule blog posts have come in very handy. First, I'd decided a while back to start talking more about what I do at Quest Software and the products that I'm a part of. Since I don't want to come across sounding like a schill, I decided that I'd put those posts on my own website and not torture you with those posts where I'm syndicated. If you're interested in posts about products like LiteSpeed or Toad for SQL Server, you can check for my regularly scheduled posts to appear on Wednesday morning. I've now got a nice little queue of Quest-related posts for many Wednesdays to come. Second, I've also decided to attempt to bring in more of the content I'd written for other websites and channels into KEK.com. So I've scheduled a series of posts that bring in other content I've written and/or recorded elsewhere. For example, Thursdays mornings are the time where I'll post my YouTube video clips. Since I already had a ton on YouTube, I'm putting those up via scheduled posts for the next several weeks. Of course, I'll also be posting new videos. But it'll be good to have all of my old videos up there too in a single place. Finally, as I mentioned before, I'd written a couple long-term columns without ever getting even one extra website hit from all that work, such as my professional development articles for SQLPass.org. I'm pulling those back onto KEK.com and will continue those columns, but as elements of my own blog. You'll see more about them here when they're posted.

How 'Bout a Little Context?

Let me be direct with you. I love SQL Saturday. If it were a woman, I'd marry it. (Avoiding all extraneous thoughts of what my real wife would say, etc etc).

Check out this fun Flickr Feed from the recent SQL Saturday in Chicago or these picks by Jorge Segara (blog | twitter) to see the sort of fun that's in store. But who can argue with a day of free SQL Server training and a chance to network with great presenters and a wide swath of your peers?

Keynotes are more fun when the put-downs fly!

I've tried to support SQL Saturday as much as I can since Andy Warren (blog | twitter) launched the program a couple years back and have spoken at several. You might say to yourself, "Self, Kevin works for a vendor. Don't they want him to speak at as many SQL Saturdays as is humanly possible?" Well, Mr. Self, you'd be mistaken. You see there's a keyword in the name that might reveal why my employer doesn't provide unlimited enthusiasm for me to speak ... it's the SATURDAY part of the whole thing. Yes, of course, my employer wants me there. But they also recognize that Saturdays are my own and that, if I spend a day or two there on the weekend (including the travel time), then that's a sacrifice of my own choice. I would still need to be at work and on task bright and early on Monday morning. Not that they'd make me, it's just that my job is the sort that work is never simply skipped, it is only ever deferred. So if I took a comp day, which they'd gladly provide, I'd still have to finish the work somehow, someway. All of this goes to say that I really, really love SQL Saturday, the community vibe that it creates, the volunteers who drive it, the folks who attend. So I'm happy to give up a few days throughout the year to support it.

My good friends Joe Webb (blog | twitter) and Louis Davidson (blog | twitter) have been angling to host a SQL Saturday here in Nashville for quite a while. As co-leaders of the local PASS chapter in middle Tennessee, it made a lot of sense to host an event like this. I wasn't at all resistant to the idea, I just didn't want to do the work myself. However, they did a great job of getting the ball rolling and even took on the majority of work themselves. Together with other volunteers in our local chapter - Shelton Dickson, Roberto Lopez, and Christina Leo - we've all set to work to host SQL Saturday #51.

The event will be hosted on Saturday, August 21st at the shiny new facility of Nashville State Community College located at 120 White Bridge Rd. Nashville, TN 37209:
