I have a lot of presentations and pre-cons coming up in the next few months. I blame Karla Landrum (Blog | @KarlaKay22 | SQLPeople) for the pre-cons – she started all this with her invitation for me to present a pre-con to SQL Saturday – Pensacola (thanks Karla!).

Week-Long Presentations

17-21 Oct 2011 – Farmville, VA – From Zero To SSIS!
I personally designed this five-day SSIS course to teach you SSIS from the ground up! The course features hands-on labs and focuses on the parts of SSIS used most in real-world development. Details here.

Day-Long Presentations

18 Aug 2011 – SQL Solstice – Raleigh, NC – A Day of SSIS
Developed by Andy Leonard to train technology professionals in the fine art of using SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) to build data integration and Extract-Transform-Load (ETL) solutions. The training is focused around lectures and emphasizes a practical approach. The target audience for this training is database professionals, application developers, and business intelligence practitioners interested in acquiring or expanding their existing SSIS skill set. No experience with SQL Server or SQL Server Integration Services is required before attending this training. It is helpful (but not required) that students possess some knowledge of and experience with relational databases. SQL Server knowledge / experience will be more helpful than experience and knowledge with other technologies.

Training Objectives
At the conclusion of the training, attendees will have been exposed to:

Using SSIS to develop data integration solutions.
Using SSIS to load a database table.
Troubleshooting real-world SSIS Data Flow Task errors.
Deploying SSIS Solutions.
Managing, monitoring, and administering SSIS in the enterprise

29 Sep 2011 – SQLBits 9 – Liverpool, England – A Day of SSIS

10 Oct 2011 – PASS Summit 2011 – Seattle, WA – A Day of SSIS in the Enterprise
Co-presenting with Tim Mitchell (Blog | @Tim_Mitchell | SQLPeople) and Matt Masson (Blog | @mattmasson)!

Single-Session Presentations

6 Aug 2011 - SQL Saturday #64 – Baton Rouge, LA – Designing an SSIS Framework and “I See a Control Flow. The following is cross-posted from the PASS Blog:

Today's post is from Andy Leonard who, along with Tim Mitchell, will be presenting "A Day of SSIS in the Enterprise". You can read more about his session here: http://www.sqlpass.org/summit/2011/Speakers/CallForSpeakers/SessionDetail.aspx?sid=1508.

Is there an audience that would benefit especially from this session?
Yep. Those getting started in SQL Server Integration Services development will get a jump start from topics presented by Matt Masson of the SSIS Developers Team at Microsoft, Tim Mitchell, SQL Server MVP, and me. Experienced SSIS developers are sure to pick up a tip or eight. And we'll be talking about features in SSIS Denali!
After having attended your seminar, what are two or three things that an attendee will be able to take back to the office and put to use right away?
Best Practices has to top that list. Tim, Matt, and I share from years of experience building solutions using SSIS. We three are also 60% of the author team of the upcoming book: SSIS Design Patterns, and we will be demonstrating patterns from the book. Finally, we'll be talking a lot about managing SSIS in the enterprise. After deploying SSIS solutions, developers often realize maintenance and support challenges. Some design decisions facilitate SSIS care and feeding, and we'll cover those!
What background should attendees ideally have to be fully prepared for your seminar?
Ideally, the attendee should have experience with SQL Server and a thirst for more data integration knowledge.
What experience are you, as a speaker, bringing to this session?
Tim , Matt, and I have decades of database integration experience. As a developer on the SSIS Team at Microsoft, Matt has visibility into myriad data integration use cases. As a consultant and trainer, Tim has delivered SSIS solutions to enterprises large and small. My experience spans consulting and managing a team of SSIS developers as we built a multi-year SSIS solution. I understand the challenges unique to developer teams that are part of an enterprise.

Go here to register for the 2011 PASS Summit.

:{>

Presenting at SQL Saturday–Wheeling!

Introduction

I am honored to present two SSIS sessions at SQL Saturday #80 in Wheeling West Virginia 23 Jul 2011! I’m delivering “I See a Control Flow Tab. Now What?”

This highly-interactive, demo-intense presentation is for beginners and developers just getting started with SSIS. Attend and learn how to build SSIS packages from the ground up.

Designing an SSIS Framework

In this “demo-tastic” presentation, SSIS trainer, author, and consultant Andy Leonard explains the what, why, and how of an SSIS framework that delivers metadata-driven package execution, connections management, and centralizes logging. Key takeaways: 1) Developers can migrate packages from Development, through their lifecycle, to Production without editing SSIS Connection Managers properties. 2) A metadata-driven approach to SSIS package execution. 3) Demonstration of a centralized logging reporting application.

Conclusion

If you read this blog and will be in attendance, please introduce yourself!
2011 is turning into The Year of Pre-Cons!

SQLBits 9, Here I Come!

(Love this graphic!)

There are some awesome pre-conference sessions lined up for SQLBits 9 Training Day by presenters such as: Allen White, Maciej Pilecki, Matt Masson, Christian Bolton, Satya SK Jayanty, Marco Russo, Duncan Sutcliffe, Jeremy Kashel, and Martijn Evers. Plus me! I know – I can hardly believe it myself! As I type this, I’m working on a gig in Saskatchewan. I had to learn to speak Canadian for the trip (and have to keep telling restaurants to please not put gravy on my French fries!) – now it looks like I have to learn to speak English.

Details…

I’ll be presenting A Day of SSIS:

A Day of SSIS was developed by Andy Leonard to train technology professionals in the fine art of using SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) to build data integration and Extract-Transform-Load (ETL) solutions.

The training is focused around lectures and emphasizes a practical approach.

Target Audience

The target audience for this training is database professionals, application developers, and business intelligence practitioners interested in acquiring or expanding their existing SSIS skill set.

Prerequisites

No experience with SQL Server or SQL Server Integration Services is required before attending this training.

It is helpful (but not required) that students possess some knowledge of and experience with relational databases. SQL Server knowledge / experience will be more helpful than experience and knowledge with other technologies.

Training Objectives

At the conclusion of the training, attendees will have been exposed to:

Using SSIS to develop data integration solutions.

Using SSIS to load a database table.

Troubleshooting real-world SSIS Data Flow Task errors.

Deploying SSIS Solutions.

Managing, monitoring, and administering SSIS in the enterprise.

Training Summary

Lesson 0: Introduction

Enterprise Execution Patterns

Leveraging the Parent-Child design pattern to build a metadata-driven SSIS execution engine.

Conclusion

Registration is not yet open, but if you join SQLBits they will let you know when registration opens. I’m looking forward to visiting Great Britain. If you read this blog and attend SQLBits 9, introduce yourself! I’m the fat guy with a fu.

It’s a team effort with Tim Mitchell (Blog | @Tim_Mitchell| SQLPeople) and – even though he isn’t listed as a presenter – Matt Masson (Blog | @mattmasson).

Like me, Tim’s been using SSIS since it was released; and Matt’s on the SSIS developer team at Microsoft – he helps build SSIS! Our preconference session is going to be packed with information and advice for developing supportable SSIS packages.

SSIS in the Enterprise (Regular Session - Level 400)

Elegant solutions deliver function and form. SSIS - in Denali and previous versions - supports elegant design. In this presentation, SQL Server MVP and author Andy Leonard demonstrates key components of an SSIS Framework to facilitate SSIS development that performs and is manageable in the modern enterprise. You can have it all - fast ETL processes, execution lineage, real-time reporting, and historical auditing - and Andy will show you how!

A Day of SSIS in the Enterprise (Preconference Session - Level 300)

In this day-long seminar, SQL Server MVPs Andy Leonard and Tim Mitchell - along with Microsoft SSIS Developer Matt Masson - demonstrate an SSIS development methodology for teams building enterprise-class solutions. Topics include:
- SSIS Design Patterns
- ETL Best Practices
- Metadata-Driven SSIS Execution
- Centralized Logging
- SSIS Frameworks
- Package Execution Monitoring
- Predictive Analytics
- Source Control
- ETL Auditing
- Deployment
- Security
The presentation team provides examples of SSIS Design Patterns from their upcoming book: SSIS Design Patterns; actionable demonstrations for building and maintaining SSIS packages in the enterprise; practical patterns that support ETL performance, instrumentation, and deployment; and pragmatic guidance for enterprise ETL Lifecycle Management.
They share from their experiences as consultants, developers in the enterprise, and experience managing teams of SSIS developers for years. The information and advice of this team is applicable in organizations of any size.

Conclusion

The PASS Summit is always a great place to network, make new friends, catch up with old friends, and learn cool stuff about SQL Server. If you read this blog and will be attending the PASS Summit this year, introduce yourself! When I return I’m on the road for a few days (more in a bit) and then I’m delivering another From Zero To SSIS! course in Farmville 6-10 Jun 2011 (there are seats available as I type, if you're interested!).

Speaking of SSIS training: I’m considering scheduling a public delivery of From Zero To SSIS! in the DC Metro area this Fall. If you’re interested please drop me a note.

Double-Booked!

I submitted an abstract for community voting at CodeStock 2011 when I saw the call for presentations. I think the Call was released back in February or March. The date was in June sometime and I didn’t know if my session would be selected, so I didn’t note the date on my calendar. Later, Karla Landrum (Blog | @KarlaKay22 | SQLPeople) called and asked if I’d be interested in delivering a day-long pre-conference seminar on SSIS before SQL Saturday #77 in Pensacola. “Of course!” I said. (It was Karla. What else would I say?)

About the time the precon tickets started selling, I got an email from CodeStock informing me my session Designing an SSIS Framework had been selected by the community. I panicked a little when I opened my calendar to add the session. The precon and SQL Saturday were 3-4 Jun – the same days as CodeStock! Durnit!

Communication to the Rescue!

I spoke to CodeStock and Karla; requesting CodeStock schedule me in the last session on Saturday 4 Jun, and seeking Karla’s permission to deliver a precon only and bail on the SQL Saturday event proper. Both consented, and I started booking flights. It’s going to be a fun weekend! I fly from Raleigh to Pensacola Thursday, deliver the precon and then fly to Knoxville Friday, and then attend and present at CodeStock before flying back to Raleigh Saturday evening. I’m probably sleeping in Sunday.

Conclusion

I’m bummed about missing the Saturday part of SQL Saturday, but also really excited about presenting at CodeStock again – I had a blast there last year.

If you read this blog and will be attending either event, please introduce yourself… if you can catch me!

:{>

Speaking at the Charlotte SQL Server Users Group Wednesday 18 May!

I am honored to present SSIS Design Patterns to the Charlotte SQL Server Users Group Wednesday, 18 May 2011!
