Okay, I promised to have them up by Tuesday or Wednesday at worst, and it is now Saturday – my apologies for the delay.

Thanks again to all the attendees of my session. I hope you enjoyed it, and if you have any question then please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me.

I had a great time in Slovenia, both during the event and in the after hours. Even if everything the tour guide said during the tour of the Laško brewery was lost on me (in his defense, he did offer to translate the Slovenian explanations to Russian), I still liked it – especially the part where we got to sample some of the produce!

I truly hope that there will be another Bleeding Edge conference next year. And if there is, I definitely want to speak there again!

Back in Atlanta!

I always enjoy spending time with my friends from Atlanta, as well as meeting folks and making new friends. If you live in the Atlanta area, I hope you'll join me on the evening of Wednesday, February 9th, 2011. Details are at the Atlanta SQL Server user group website.

It's common knowledge that I have a terrible memory for many things. However, one of the few things that my memory is usually really good at is remember names & faces (and remembering stories, but that is another story as well).

It's only in the last couple years that I've gotten to know Atlanta-area folks like Aaron Nelson (blog | twitter), at left. Aaron likes to tease me because the first time or two we talked after our initial introduction, I kept getting his name wrong. That's uncharacteristic of me. But, hey, I was distracted because Aaron had brought his 12 year old daughter along and I kept wishing that I'd brought mine!

Aaron has really good content on SQL Server and PowerShell on his blog and in his presentations. Don't miss out!

Another person in the Atlanta area I've enjoyed getting to know better is Stuart Ainsworth (blog | twitter). Stuart has really stepped up to the plate these last couple years as a leader and a volunteer. I'm really impressed with his efforts, especially because they're in very important but rather invisible and thankless tasks. One example is his work in succession governance for PASS. Stuart, I salute you and thank you for your efforts.

I hope to see y'all there! And if I don't, y'all come up and visit us in Nashville some time.

Cheers,

-Kev

In
enterprise IT, database professionals face a mixed-bag of platforms
within their environments -- and the overlapping duties that go along
with them. Whether you like it or not, you get asked to support Microsoft SQL Server operations even though you're an Oracle DBA.

In this instructive webcast, experts from Microsoft and Quest with years of experience in both platforms will discuss the biggest issues and areas of interest for Oracle DBAs who need to work on Microsoft
SQL Server. You'll learn their tips and tricks for efficiency and gain
a deeper understanding of SQL Server to help you add more value than
ever to your organization.

Of course, there are always questions and we aim to please. Here are
the transcripts of the Q&A chat session (below) that accompanies
the presentation. The only editing I did was ... [READ MORE]

Two Free Training Webcasts Open for Registration

We've got two sessions that you need to sign up

and queries in SQL Server 2008. The presenters will show you how to
easily:

Read query execution plans and identify bottlenecks
in performance

Record system performance metrics for trend
analysis

Design databases and write Transact–SQL code to avoid

how to build one

Use industry-accepted best practices and
develop your own to arrive at optimal database performance

Much

The blog entry was based on some discussions I'd listened in on between a few other SQL Server MVPs. In it, I said:

Oh, and there is one more change for trace flags in SQL Server 2005. They can be specified as either local (new in SQL Server 2005) or global (as in SQL Server 2000) using an additional argument in dbcc traceon(...). If the second argument is not specified, the default value is local in SQL Server 2005, but is always global in SQL Server 2000.

Kalen found a couple of problems with the paragraph which I'd like to share with you now.

First of all, the parameter to make traceflags global was available in SQL Server 2000. Also, the default was NOT to make all traceflags global. It just frequently seemed like they were immediately set to global. But they weren’t guaranteed to be global unless you used the -1 second parameter.

If you turned on a traceflag for one session, without the global flag it would be available to all other sessions that had any traceflags of their own turned on, or if any traceflags had been set to explicitly be global. However, a session that had no flags set would not see any flags set as local in other connections. It was basically that each session either had traceflags enabled or it didn’t. Once a single traceflag was enabled for a session, then ALL flags enabled for ANY session would be available to that session.

Kalen actually wrote about it here, 5 years ago:

http://www.sqlmag.com/Article/ArticleID/26406/Investigating_Trace_Flags.html

I agree with Kalen that it IS very confusing.

I hope this helps set the record straight.

Cheers,

-Kevin
