Old-style DBAs are standing on the shaky ground. 5 years ago I remember myself defending the SQL Server against the domineering Oracle DBAs. The arguing was always about “who is better”. Thank you for writing it up! I would like to mention two more factors that are very important for me:

1. Robustness. Bugs and issues erode my bottom line and my customers's confidence, so in many cases it is much cheaper to use a reliable product with less features. For example, it is perfectly fine if Twitter loses a rant about long line at Starbucks. Yet it is unacceptable if my hospital loses a fact from my medical history. So the technologies good enough for Twitter might not be good enough in other cases.

2. Potential speed of change. If needed, we can have a change in an open source product in a couple of days, doing it ourselves or hiring somebody. If, however, a closed source product does not work as we need it, our options are more limited, and we can lose money because of it.

Don't know how the support now is with Twin fin and once IBM took over Netezza.
