Did You Know? Free SQL Server Troubleshooting Tools

I'm very excited about the new Management Data Warehouse coming in SQL Server 2008 (which was called Performance Studio at one point), but keep in mind there are lots of available tools in the current versions.

One of the students in my class last week put together this list of his favorites. Note that some of the tools can be used together. For example, the PSSDIAG collection utility output can be pumped into SQL Nexus for nice reporting and analysis.

RML Utilities for SQL Server

SQL Nexus

PSSDIAG Data Collection Utility

Description of the SQL Server Performance Analysis Utilities Read80Trace and OSTRESS

SQL Server Health and History Tool (SQLH2)

Performance Dashboard

Have fun!

These existing SQL2005 tools are fine and useful. But one problem with them is that they are not a coherent bunch of tools--they are rather ad hoc, developed by different people, coming from different directions, targeting slightly differnt problems, and not systematically related to each other. In this respect, the SQL Server community can learn a lot from Oracle 10s' Automatic Workload Repository (AWR) and Automatic Database Diagnostic Monitor (ADDM). I'm not here to promote Oracle, but it would be a mistake not to learn from others' experience. These Oracle tools have been around for about 5 years, and have accumulated quite a bit of community experience. We can gain a lot from their experience--good, bad, and ugly.

I have not had a chance to study SQL2008 Management Data Warehouse in any depth, so I can't comment on where it is compared to Oracle 10g/11g. If anybody knows, I'd very much like to hear.

Hi Kalen,

I would add PAL which I've used a few times recently. Not a Silver Bullet but helps out when u get a little bogged down in a Perfmon.

Takes a perfmon and performs analysis / recommedations based on rule of thumb for various workloads (ie SQL Server / Exchange / Web etc)
