Did You Know? Another Cumulative Update Package is Available

Yep, CU #7 was announced yesterday... see for details.

It is interested that MS says:

A supported cumulative update package is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problems that are described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing these specific problems. This cumulative update package may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by any of these problems, we recommend that you wait for the next SQL Server 2005 service pack that contains the hotfixes in this cumulative update package.

So we're all waiting... just when will this next SQL Server Service Pack be available? When will it even be announced?  Maybe any day now....

Interesting, they went back and altered the wording of ALL of the post-SP2 cumulative updates, which previously gave no hint at all that another service pack might be coming.  However, no updates in a while in the Connect item Hugo entered.

Is it a good practice to install these cumulative update packages as they're released?  I think Microsoft's official stance is to wait for the SPs, but those are so infrequent anymore.  If you need to install one or two hotfixes anyway, is it better just to install the latest cumulative update package?

Hi Aaron,

>>which previously gave no hint at all that another service pack might be coming<<

They did, actually, always include exactly that statement. Which is one of the reasons why I was so upset when I learned that there were no plans for SP3 because noone asked for it.

These cumulative update packages seem like a crapshoot to me.    The early ones locked up my system or ran the cpu at 100%, but it seems 6 and 7 are at least stable, so I plan to take a chance.
