Is it appropriate to install this when my SQL Server is still SQL 2012?

You can, but be careful with SSIS projects. They get updated to the SQL 2014 level and don't go back (at least not easily). SSRS and SSAS projects seem unaffected and interchange with earlier versions of the tools.
