SQL Server 2016 SP1 shocks the world!!!

The entire World has been shocked today! We have never expected to see something like this. Go, grab SQL Server 2016 SP1 and you get all those:

Now in SQL Server 2016 Express you have (for FREE):

  • row level security
  • dynamic data masking
  • database snapshot
  • columnstore indexes!!!!
  • partitioning!!!!!!!!
  • compression (page, row…)
  • in memory oltp
  • Always encrypted
  • polybase…..
  • auditing!!!!!
  • multiple filestream containers

It is like roller coaster especially for companies that use Standard edition as their primary engine.

However, the reality was that software developers were not going rewrite code for a small installed base. So Intel ended up having subsequent new instruction extensions pushed into the entire product line, obsoleting the previous generation.

I suppose Microsoft is coming to the same conclusion. I am of the opinion that Enterprise Edition should emphasize the type of support available, possibly the degree of HA.
